In a perfect world, we would all have dogs that would stack perfectly on command, stand as still as possible and look with great attention and interest while we settled in to snap a few good shots. However, since we dont live in a perfect world, our job is much harder. lol. Initially, a stack will take three people. 1 to take the photo, 1 to position the dog and 1 to stand in front and get the dogs attention. As the dogs get older and/or get more practice, you can get away with 2 people. If you get REALLY lucky, your dog will catch on and eventually you can do it yourself (or they will just happen to stack themselves while looking at something while you happen to have your camera. yay!)Every critique should also have a headshot included. Examples of everything can be found below.
Headshots:
Should be taken from the front. The side profile can be seen in the stacking photo, so a front on shot in needed here.
incorrect:
correct:
Now, here's the good, the bad and the ugly of stacking, all with the same dog.
Bad:
Whats wrong here: the dog should be looking straight ahead, to give a profile. The front legs should also be more under the dog (almost so that the dog appears to be leaning forward. The background is o.k., but is slightly busy. The angle of the photo is good. Dogs should not be wearing collars in a stack shot UNLESS it is a show lead/collar or fursaver, used for showing.
Ugly:
What wrong here: the front legs are uneven, the photo is taken from the wrong angle and the back leg is not at a 90* angle with the ground, as it should be. This makes the dog look poor, even though it clearly was the winner of this class.
Good:
This is a great snapshot to show off this dogs good points. While the back leg is a little overextended, it doesnt detract from the overall picture. In fact, it helps the lay of the croup in the photo to present a very harmonious topline.
Another good shot:
